Brand profile

MUJI

Muji sells household objects with the branding removed and the price held down. Stationery, storage, bedding, clothing, and a small range of appliances, all in the same restrained palette.

Why we keep coming back

Muji is the rare mass retailer whose restraint is genuine rather than a styling choice. The reason to shop there is consistency: buy a storage box in 2019 and the one you buy today still stacks with it. That is a real form of quality and almost nobody else offers it. Be selective though. Their stationery and bedding are among the best value we know of anywhere, and their small electronics are ordinary products at a premium for looking calm. The aroma diffuser is a lovely object with a mediocre atomiser. Buy the pens and the linen, and think twice about anything with a plug.

How they think

No-brand quality goods. Simplify the material, cut the packaging, leave the object plain, and pass the saving on.

Where they fall short

Pricing outside Japan carries a heavy markup. Some Muji staples cost twice what an equivalent Indian or Korean product does, and the difference is not always in the object.
