Keychron solved a problem the custom keyboard scene had made worse. Before them, a wireless board with a Mac layout and swappable switches meant a group buy, a nine month wait and a soldering iron. Keychron simply sold it. The trade-off is real: the case tolerances are not boutique, and the stock switches and stabilisers on the cheaper lines are the first thing most people replace. But hot-swap sockets mean that is a fifteen minute job rather than a new purchase, which is exactly the right compromise at this price.
Ship the features enthusiasts actually ask for, at volume, and let people change the parts they care about instead of paying for a configuration they do not want.
Quality control varies between production runs. Check a fresh board for rattling stabilisers on the spacebar and shift keys in the first week, while a return is still easy.
